A History Haven for the Curious
Nestled in the heart of the United States, Jefferson City is home to some of Missouri's most iconic landmarks. Your journey starts by walking in the footsteps of Missouri's movers and shakers at the Missouri State Capitol. Meander the marble hallways at your own pace or take advantage of a free guided tour. Keep your eyes open to catch legislators in action and discover hidden artistic treasures, including magnificent murals by Thomas Hart Benton and Sir Frank Brangwyn depicting the state's history and natural beauty. Just steps away, the Governor's Mansion allows you to peek into the lives of Missouri's first families. Wander through the elegant parlor adorned with period furniture and stroll through the landscaped grounds of the Carnahan Memorial Garden, a peaceful tribute to public service. This serene oasis nestled within the Capitol Complex has scenic flowers, walkways and a reflection pool. For a deeper dive into the city's legend and lore, the Missouri State Penitentiary offers stories of infamous inmates, daring escapes and the facilities' role in Missouri and U.S. history. Open from 1836-2004, the historic prison housed some of the most notorious criminals in the USA.
Outdoor Fun for the Adventure Seeker
With the Missouri River flowing alongside the city, there are endless opportunities to explore the outdoors in Jefferson City. Visit a partial section of Katy Trail State Park, a popular place to trade the city buzz for countryside magic. Follow the abandoned rail lines from the former Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad to see why this is a playground for nature lovers. History buffs can get a glimpse into Missouri's rural history as they rest in charming towns along the way. Want more moments of zen? Wilson's Serenity Point provides sunset views that paint the river in golden hues. You can also trek across the pedestrian/bike bridge to take in panoramic views on foot.
Timeless Traditions for the Dedicated
Jefferson City has a knack for warm hospitality and storied traditions. Linger with the locals for authentic experiences that will become lasting memories. The Jefferson Landing State Historic Site gives a glimpse of everyday life during early settlement, taking visitors back in time inside an 1850s general store museum housed inside one of the oldest buildings in Jefferson City. Depending on when you visit, you might catch an awe-inspiring tribute to Missouri’s connection to aviation at the Show-Me State Airshow. Nearby at Central Dairy Ice Cream Parlor, your taste buds are in for a delightful treat. This charming spot is complete with vintage decor and large sundae bowls that have been piled high with cherries and whipped cream since 1934.
Fun Fact

The current Missouri State Capitol building was finished in 1917, but it’s the third one built in Jefferson City. The first building caught fire in 1837, and the second one stood until 1911 when a lightning bolt struck its dome.
