Thrill seekers and outdoor enthusiasts flock to Illinois to experience everything the state has to offer. Located in the Midwest region of the USA, there are plenty of opportunities to get outside, breathe the fresh air, enjoy the scenery and do something daring and fun. If you’re looking for the perfect Illinois adventure, be sure to stop by one of these destinations.
Starved Rock State Park
Less than 160 kilometers from Chicago, Starved Rock State Park is filled with cascading waterfalls, steep cliffs, rugged canyons and sandstone buttes. The park gets its name from a Native American legend about a clash between the Ottawa and Illinois tribes where the Illinois fled to the great rock and died of starvation. Go for a hike on one of the trails and experience the impressive scenery. Starting in December, go eagle watching at the top of Starved Rock where you can see thousands of eagles who have migrated here for the winter. Join a drum circle at the Visitor Center, go cross-country skiing from December through March, and bring a meal to enjoy at one of the eight designated picnic spots. When you’re tired, the park also has a lodge with 69 hotel rooms and 21 cabins in the woods so you can spend the night in this luscious paradise.
