Maryland Heights was named by settlers in the early 1900s. They saw the rolling hills in the northeast side of town and were reminded of their home state, Maryland.

While it's not known how Creve Coeur Park and Lake got its name, one local legend claims the moniker comes from the tragic death of a Native American woman, who jumped from the cliffs above Dripping Springs after the disappearance of her husband. Superstitious park goers claim to have seen the woman’s ghost atop the waterfall while boating under the full moon.
