From the moment you land in Pago Pago on Tutuila, American Samoa’s main island, the unique South Pacific landscape invites exploration. Volcanic mountains and craters cut through emerald green rainforests, which meet the dark blue sea. The scene here needs no filter, and there are many ways to experience it, from canoe tours led by local guides to taking in the view on a hike up Matafao, Tutuila’s highest peak.

American Samoa’s shoreline is as dazzling as the territory’s lush interior and features several beaches, among them the accessible Alega and Avaio. Smaller islands offer visitors the chance to escape to more tranquil shores.

History and culture are truly intertwined with old villages and modern towns existing side-by-side. The museums, markets and small communities preserve American Samoan history, reflect its lively culture and let guests participate in the rituals of daily life. Savor the experience at restaurants and inns, too, which serve fresh traditional fare like palusami and taro.
