Visit Evanston’s Charles Gates Dawes House, the historic home of the USA’s 30th Vice President. For a glimpse into college life, take a leisurely stroll through Northwestern University’s ivy-lined campus, set on the shores of Lake Michigan. Just north, Sheridan Road follows a gorgeous, winding route that offers spectacular views of gracious homes, glorious architecture and the bounty of nature.

For a unique perspective on the area, tour Grosse Point Lighthouse, built in 1873, or marvel at Wilmette’s Bahá’í House of Worship, the only one in the Western Hemisphere. Its white walls with lace-like ornamentation and dome rising 41 meters above the main floor create a scene of unsurpassed beauty and tranquility. Visit the Illinois Holocaust Museum, which brings a unique cultural experience to the Midwest and lets visitors explore important issues of tolerance.

Wander dozens of natural gardens from the brightly-coloured and whimsical to the subtle and serene at Chicago Botanic Garden, or time your trip for the Ravinia musical festival, held all summer in Ravinia Park and featuring a huge range of artists. In Skokie, the North Shore Center for the Performing Arts is a two-theatre complex presenting world-class theatre, dance, music and comedy. If it’s time to eat, head to Wheeling’s famed Restaurant Row, or try any of the dozens of new restaurants throughout the area.

If shopping is your passion, you’re covered: World-class shopping centres – Westfield Old Orchard, The Glen Town Center and Northbrook Court – are favourites, while the downtowns of Evanston and Winnetka offer cosmopolitan boutiques with genuine neighborhood flair. For family fun, discover the Kohl Children’s Museum, where kids from birth to age 8 can play in hands-on areas. The family can also get a taste of yesteryear at Wagner Farm. Milk a cow, hear a rooster marking time and see how bread is made in a wood-burning stove on this genuine American farm.
