Affectionately known as “the national pastime,” baseball is one of the most popular spectator sports in the United States.
Each year more than 70 million fans flock to 29 Major League baseball stadiums around the country, plus one in Toronto, Canada.
Miller Park — Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Milwaukee is famous for its sausages, so go ahead and indulge in the local specialty at Klement’s Sausage Haus at Miller Park. Cheer on the Brewers while eating a chorizo bratwurst, a spicy sausage served on a bun or with pico de gallo on a soft tortilla. Wash it down with a pint of the citrusy and hoppy India pale lager from Leinenkugel’s, a Wisconsin brewery.
Chase Field — Phoenix, Arizona
If you didn’t think a hot dog could be any better, the culinary team at Phoenix’s Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, may prove you wrong. The churro dog is an ice cream sundae made to look like a hot dog. The cinnamon- and sugar-covered churro — a fried-dough pastry — acts as the hot dog, and a long, chocolate-glazed donut cut in half forms the bun. Instead of traditional hot dog toppings like ketchup and mustard, the churro dog is topped with three scoops of vanilla frozen yogurt, whipped cream and chocolate and caramel sauces.
Inspiration for the Arizona Diamondbacks’ churro dog comes from the traditional baseball treat, the hot dog.
Sweet Potato Waffle Chicken Sandwich
Minute Maid Park — Houston, Texas
Street Eats in Houston’s Minute Maid Park serves a variation on chicken and waffles, with a sweet potato waffle sandwich stuffed with grilled chicken, Greek yogurt, baby spinach and sliced tomato. Enjoy it with a side of Irish nachos ¬— golden Kettle potato chips topped with jalapeño queso, ground beef, salsa and sour cream — while watching the Astros fight for the American League championship.
Angel Stadium — Anaheim, California
A long line usually stretches from the Smoke Ring BBQ at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, a strong indication that its house-smoked ribs, kielbasa and brisket are worth the wait. Try the brisket sandwich, piled high with tenderly smoked beef brisket in a tangy sauce. To avoid the line while you’re watching the Angels play, visit the Smoke Ring Express on the terrace level in section 237, where a small stand serves just the brisket sandwiches.
Lines are often long to buy the tasty brisket sandwich at Angel Stadium in Anaheim.
Deep-Dish Stuffed Pizza
Wrigley Field — Chicago, Illinois
Chicago-style pizza is typically as thick as a cake, in order to support the chunky tomato sauce and gobs of cheese. Take Chicago-style pizza to a new level at Giordano’s location inside Wrigley Field, home of the Cubs. Savor a slice of stuffed pizza — with a top and bottom crust filled with cheese and toppings like pepperoni, Italian sausage and spinach and topped with tomato sauce.
SunTrust Park — Atlanta, Georgia
The culinary team at Atlanta’s old ballpark, Turner Field, created a memorable menu which has fortunately carried over to the Braves’ new ballpark. One of the most memorable items is the burgerizza, a 567-gram beef patty topped with five slices of cheddar cheese and crispy bacon, served between two eight-inch pepperoni pizzas. This calorie-filled concoction is best shared with friends.
The Burgerizza served at Atlanta’s SunTrust Park combines pizza and hamburger. Consider sharing it with your friends.
Crab Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Nationals Park — Washington, D.C.
Blue crabs are the culinary pride of the Chesapeake Bay area. They’re featured on menus all over Washington, D.C. and the rest of the region in crab cakes or straight out of the shell. Although you can’t go wrong with a classic crab cake sandwich at Chesapeake Crab Cake Co. in the Nationals Park, the Washington Nationals stadium, take your blue crab consumption up a notch with the crab grilled cheese sandwich, made with creamy Brie cheese and crab meat between slices of toasted sourdough bread.
