The cathedral-like Smith Rock in central Oregon beckons to rock climbers the world over.

Rising from the desert landscape about 230 kilometers southeast of Portland, Oregon, these tuff and basalt spires are one of the state’s most popular climbing spots. Smith Rock is also an iconic landmark along the Pacific Crest Trail, which runs more than 4,200 kilometers through California, Oregon and Washington state.

The focal point of Smith Rock State Park, this rock formation makes an appearance in the movie Wild in which actress Reese Witherspoon reenacts author Cheryl Strayed’s solo trek along the Pacific Crest Trail. Keep your eyes peeled for this scenic landscape when watching the movie, which premiered in theaters around the world in January 2014.
