South Carolina: Coastal Destinations
By Manuela Mezzadri
I had heard of the traditional "Southern hospitality," but until I landed in South Carolina, I had no idea what it meant – a relaxed atmosphere, friendly smiles and warm greetings from everyone you meet. But this state is also rich in history, traditions and culture. If you’re looking for all of this with a dreamy view of the ocean, you’ll find it along South Carolina’s charming coast.
Beaches and Golf on Hilton Head Island
We began our journey exploring Hilton Head Island, which offers picturesque beaches, world-class golf courses and activities for all tastes. You can try one of the many water sports, or go walking, running or even bike riding on its white sands for miles, breathing the fresh Atlantic air and watching the dolphins play in the waves.
From here, we had a fascinating visit to the Harbour Town Lighthouse and discovered artefacts, photographs and documents that describe the history and development of the island. From the top of the lighthouse, we savored a breath-taking view of the island, the ocean and one of the most famous golf courses in the world, Harbour Town Golf Links.
Charleston: Timeless Coastal Charm
We travelled north along the coast and arrived in Charleston, with its rich heritage and unique lifestyle that remains tied to the cultural and gastronomic traditions of the South. Everything in Charleston is fascinating: its historic residences, the streets paved with cobblestones, the shops of King Street and the promenade of Battery Park. The best way to explore is by foot, either alone or on any number of themed walking tours. You can also traverse these historic streets by horse-drawn carriage.
Driving through long and beautiful boulevards lined with ancient oaks, we headed for Middletown Place Plantation, a large piece of land where historic buildings have been preserved, along with stables, well-maintained gardens, lakes and ponds. The day ended with a fantastic dinner of typical dishes like shrimp and grits, fried pimento cheese, tater tots and tasty bacon!
Myrtle Beach: Fun for the Entire Family
A popular destination for families, Myrtle Beach features more than 90 km of beaches, amusement parks and attractions, restaurants and shopping for all tastes. And speaking of shopping, do not miss a visit to Tanger Outlets where you can buy name-brand accessories and clothes at great prices.
After a relaxing walk on the beach, we went up on the SkyWheel, the big Ferris wheel that offers breath-taking panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean – not to be missed. We stopped for lunch at ART burger - sushi - bar, where the delightful owners, Larry and Fabiana, served tasty creations including the phenomenal burgers, fried-chicken sushi topped with macaroni and cheese, and delicious Nutella ice cream made to order using nitrogen!
All along these coastal destinations, you’ll find loads of fun! Pack your bags; beautiful South Carolina is waiting for you!
