Shopping and Dining on Hilton Head Island

By Renan Leahy

Surrounded by a variety of amazing beaches, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is a destination for the whole family. Located in the southern region of the state also known as the Lowcountry, Hilton Head Island attracts thousands of tourists from around the world in search of a relaxing escape with indulgent amenities. In this vacation paradise, the order of the day is to relax, rejuvenate and reconnect with those you love and the important things in life.

Treats for the Body, Mind and Palate
Coligny Beach Park’s long stretch of sand is an invitation to relax to the sound of the calm waters of the sea. The promenade bordering the beach guarantees easy access for wheelchairs, and offers all the comforts of home: bathrooms, fresh water showers, chairs and umbrellas and even wireless Internet!

Right across from the beach, you can start exploring the Island’s downtown area and the many attractions. A must-do is strolling Hilton Head Island’s streets, while enjoying the local cuisine.

Great Food on the Island

Speaking of dining, there is so much to savor here on Hilton Head Island. For the gourmands among us, I would recommend taking a “tasting tour” where, for a reasonable price, you will enjoy a guided visit of the island. My tour included five stops in five different restaurants where I sampled southern specialties such as a pulled pork slider (a small sandwich made of slow-cooked pork; award-winning at Bomboras Grill, an address to remember); or the famous southern shrimp and grits. The bonus was a delicious cupcake straight from the warm oven of Sweet Carolina Cupcakes (another address to remember, since you can visit this pastry shop every day and enjoy a rotating menu of flavors). Please note that the tour is provided in English only, but the food still speaks for itself, even if you don’t speak the language.

Regarding the calories, no problem! On Hilton Head Island, you can bike from the beach to the restaurant or from the tennis court to the pool.

Shopping in Hilton Head

True to the island’s laidback nature, shopping on Hilton Head Island is generally dominated by quaint shops, locally-owned specialty boutiques and small shopping plazas. There are also high-end retailers and exclusive shops for a luxury shopping experience. However, if you desire a larger selection of famous retailers and well-known name brands, head over the bridge to Bluffton to explore Tanger Outlets. You’ll find a large variety of stores, from Coach to Hollister to Tommy Hilfiger and more.

Travel and Lodging
Getting to Hilton Head Island is easy! You have two options: you can fly into the Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport in Georgia, less than an hour from Hilton Head, or the cozy Hilton Head Island Airport, where U.S. Airways Express offers daily flights from Charlotte, North Carolina. And when you arrive, you will find many luxury resorts and vacation rentals offering everything you need to enjoy every moment of your stay.

Bring your family for a visit to Hilton Head Island and discover together all the wonders that this corner of South Carolina has to offer.
