Heike Bachmann's Profile
"Heike is one of DiscoverAmerica.com’s German travel writers and hosts. Hailing from Munich, she traded Germany’s beer capital for the Big Apple where she records voice overs for the likes of Lufthansa, Adidas and the MoMA. She loves eco travel as much as indulgence trips and is equally happy zip-lining through swamps as she is exploring local food and shopping."
Natchitoches, Louisiana: Cane River National Heritage Area
One of the biggest surprises of my recent trip to Louisiana was discovering the lovely town of Natchitoches. Established some 300 years ago in 1714 and named after an Indian tribe, Natchitoches lies in the heart of the Cane River National Heritage Area and is a wonderful place to experience the cultural history of Louisiana.
Shopping and Fun in Chicago Northwest
While Chicago certainly will satisfy your big-city cultural desires, I learned on my last trip that some of the best shopping to be had is in Chicago Northwest, a vibrant suburban area with great attractions and convenient Metra access from downtown Chicago.
Houma, Louisiana: Holiday in Bayou Country
Time seems to stop as we drive along the scenic Bayou Black, outside of Houma, Louisiana. A fisherman in overalls sits on a wooden dock, leisurely waiting for his catch, an egret spreads its majestic wings into the air and the lush green landscape stretches across the seemingly endless horizon. This is Louisiana’s South, the Bayou Country, where the Mississippi Delta borders the Gulf of Mexico and a world of untouched natural beauty can be yours to explore.
The Creole Nature Trail in Lake Charles, Louisiana
As we head deep into Southwest Louisiana, lush green surrounds us as far as the eye can see, interspersed with beautifully clear bayous and ponds. Herons are carefully stalking along the water’s edge, waiting for the fish that the Gulf of Mexico washes into the bayous with every tide. Here and there, an osprey rises from the tall grass with large wings, and a small group of pelicans on our left indicates that Holly Beach can’t be far. This landscape exudes an incredible calm, and day-to-day life seems infinitely far away. Welcome to the Creole Nature Trail, one of the oldest scenic byways in America.
Monroe-West Monroe, Louisiana: The Arts and Culture of Northeast Louisiana
Just when I thought I had seen it all in Louisiana, I discovered the Twin Cities: Monroe and West Monroe, scenically connected by the Ouachita River in the Northeast region of the Pelican State. With wonderful museums, vineyards, antique stores and restaurants, I found Monroe-West Monroe a great place to shop, eat and discover!
